Purple pillsIn some cases, acid reflux medicine can be helpful for GERD, particularly if you do not suffer from symptoms all the time. Over-the-counter medications can help to reduce acid reflux, but they tend not to work as quickly as people would like them to.

Products like omeprazole or lansoprazole are proton pump inhibitors and work on a systemic basis.  They are not an immediate treatment for acid or gas. They are, however, very effective.  These were at one time prescription only drugs.
